Elizabeth Crisfield

Thesis Topic:
Consequences of the predicted climate-driven transition from maple/beech/birch to oak/hickory in National Park Service units along the Appalachian Trail.

Short Bio:
Elizabeth Crisfield worked for Everglades National Park, in Florida and Washington, DC, from 2000-2006 as a hydrologist, water rights negotiator, and science communications specialist.  She holds a B.S. in Physics from James Madison University and an M.S. in Soil Physics from the University of
Georgia.  After teaching physics for the last year and a half, Elizabeth is returning to natural resources.  She is working toward a PhD in Geography at Penn State where she will be investigating climate change
impacts on eastern forests along the Appalachian Trail.  She is a presenter for The Climate Project and recently co-edited and produced a report for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy describing a new ecological monitoring program called the A.T. MEGA-Transect.  Alongside her scientific endeavors,
Elizabeth is a professional fiddler and also enjoys quilting, hiking, and practicing yoga.

Research Interests
  • I am interested in cause-effect relationships within the field of ecology. I am particularly interested in developing pro-active land management policies that anticipate the ecological complications of climate change.
Work Experience
  • I worked for Everglades National Park, in Florida and Washington, D.C. from 2000 to 2006 as a hydrologist, water rights negotiator, and science communications specialist. I have also taught high school and community college physics.
